The Teaching Librarian: Web 2.0, Technology, and Legal Aspects – Kris Helge, Laura McKinnon – Google-kirjat

Librarians need to utilize web 2.0 tools to generate rich-text learning environments, creating enriching, challenging, and supportive learning platforms for students. The Teaching Librarian shows how to utilize wikis, mindmaps, and Second Life to improve pedagogy for librarians. This title covers how to obtain administration approval to implement web 2.0 tools, how to deal with and prevent technological glitches, and remain aware of relevant legal issues in the UK and the USA. The book also outlines how to create learning interfaces that meet the needs of nontraditional students. The six chapters cover key areas of pedagogy and web 2.0, including: the relevance of LibGuides and its uses for pedagogy; using cloud computing and mobile apps in teaching; teaching with Wikis, Second Life, and Mind Maps; practical issues with web 2.0 technology; and a chapter on the legal issues surrounding the use of web 2.0 for pedagogy.Provides examples of empirical research that tests the implementation of Second Life, wikis, and mind maps in pedagogical scenariosOffers research that enables pedagogy while remaining aware of and complying with current United Kingdom and US legal frameworksProvides case studies and empirical research showing how to gain acceptance of technology in academic environments

Oncology Informatics: Using Health Information Technology to Improve … – Bradford W. Hesse, David Ahern, Ellen Beckjord – Google-kirjat

Oncology Informatics: Using Health Information Technology to Improve Processes and Outcomes in Cancer Care encapsulates National Cancer Institute-collected evidence into a format that is optimally useful for hospital planners, physicians, researcher, and informaticians alike as they collectively strive to accelerate progress against cancer using informatics tools. This book is a formational guide for turning clinical systems into engines of discovery as well as a translational guide for moving evidence into practice. It meets recommendations from the National Academies of Science to “reorient the research portfolio” toward providing greater “cognitive support for physicians, patients, and their caregivers” to “improve patient outcomes.” Data from systems studies have suggested that oncology and primary care systems are prone to errors of omission, which can lead to fatal consequences downstream. By infusing the best science across disciplines, this book creates new environments of “Smart and Connected Health.” Oncology Informatics is also a policy guide in an era of extensive reform in healthcare settings, including new incentives for healthcare providers to demonstrate “meaningful use” of these technologies to improve system safety, engage patients, ensure continuity of care, enable population health, and protect privacy. Oncology Informatics acknowledges this extraordinary turn of events and offers practical guidance for meeting meaningful use requirements in the service of improved cancer care. Anyone who wishes to take full advantage of the health information revolution in oncology to accelerate successes against cancer will find the information in this book valuable. Presents a pragmatic perspective for practitioners and allied health care professionals on how to implement Health I.T. solutions in a way that will minimize disruption while optimizing practice goals Proposes evidence-based guidelines for designers on how to create system interfaces that are easy to use, efficacious, and timesaving Offers insight for researchers into the ways in which informatics tools in oncology can be utilized to shorten the distance between discovery and practice

Defending Democracies: Combating Foreign Election …

Defending Democracies: Combating Foreign Election Interference in a Digital Age – Google-kirjat

Election interference is one of the most widely discussed international phenomena of the last five years. Russian covert interference in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election elevated the topic into a national priority, but that experience was far from an isolated one. Evidence of election interference by foreign states or their proxies has become a regular feature of national elections and is likely to get worse in the near future. Information and communication technologies afford those who would interfere with new tools that can operate in ways previously unimaginable: Twitter bots, Facebook advertisements, closed social media platforms, algorithms that prioritize extreme views, disinformation, misinformation, and malware that steals secret campaign communications. Defending Democracies examines the problem through an interdisciplinary lens and focuses on: (i) defining the problem of foreign election interference, (ii) exploring the solutions that international law might bring to bear, and (iii) considering alternative regulatory frameworks for understanding and addressing the problem. The result is a deeply urgent examination of an old problem on social media steroids, one that implicates the most central institution of liberal democracy: elections. The volume seeks to bring domestic and international perspectives on elections and election law into conversation with other disciplinary frameworks, escaping the typical biases of lawyers who prefer international legal solutions for issues of international relations. Taken together, the chapters in this volume represent a more faithful representation of the broad array of solutions that might be deployed, including international and domestic, legal and extra-legal, ambitious and cautious.
